The VOC Hollandia was a Dutch East India Company ship that met a tragic fate in 1743. Having departed from the Netherlands, the Hollandia was part of a fleet bound for the Far East, carrying valuable cargo and passengers. As she navigated through treacherous waters near the Isles of Scilly, disaster struck. Due to a navigational error, the ship collided with rocks and sank, leading to the loss of all 276 people on board.
The wreck was later discovered in 1971, offering a glimpse into the maritime history of the 18th century and the perilous journeys undertaken by trading vessels of the era. This coin is one of the “Pieces of Eight” recovered from the wreck.
